Step Into Static with Graph Zero’s 15oz Skein Dyeing Denim Slim Jeans
When I was a kid, I’d sometimes sit there staring at the static on our little CRT TV whenever the cable dropped out. I was completely mesmerized by it. What that says about me, I couldn’t tell you.
Thankfully, I didn’t grow up to be like Jim Carrey’s The Cable Guy. I did, however, become a pretty serious denim head, which makes these Graph Zero 15oz Skein Dyeing Jeans feel like a subtle full-circle moment. Their slubby black and grey weave whimsically resembles television static—and I can’t stop staring at them for the same reason I couldn’t look away from that fuzzy old screen all those years ago.
What makes this denim fabric so special is the skein dyeing technique used to dye the yarns. Also known as Hank dyeing or Kasezome, skein dyeing is an artisanal textile process where loose, looped bundles of yarn are immersed in a dye bath, resulting in deep color penetration, a soft texture, and minimal fiber stress. Rather than dyeing every yarn to the same shade, it looks as though Graph Zero had separate batches skein-dyed to varying tonal depths—from light grey to deep black—before weaving them together at a super low tension for a slubby texture.
After leaving the loom resembling a busted analog TV screen, this unique selvedge denim is woven into slim straight jeans with ample room in the top block. The jeans are finished with custom engraved buttons and hardware, herringbone twill pocket bags, hidden coin pocket selvedge, and a custom vegetable-tanned leather patch before receiving a one-wash rinse to remove shrinkage.
